Passé Composé (Present Perfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb citer
Introduction to the verb citer
The English translation of the French verb citer is “to cite” or “to quote”. It comes from the Latin word “citare”, which means “to call, summon, or urge”.
In everyday French, citer is most often used in the Passé Composé (Present Perfect) tense to talk about actions that have been completed in the past. It is used to indicate that something has been mentioned or referenced.
Three simple examples of its usage in the Passé Composé tense are:
- J’ai cité plusieurs auteurs dans mon mémoire. (I cited several authors in my thesis.)
- Ils ont cité cette phrase célèbre lors de leur discours. (They quoted this famous sentence during their speech.)
- Elle a cité les sources de ses informations. (She cited the sources of her information.)
In these examples, citer is used to indicate that something has been mentioned or referenced in the past. In contrast to the Passé Simple tense, which is used for actions that are completely finished, the Passé Composé tense emphasizes the result or consequence of the action.
