Introduction to the verb herser
The English translation of the French verb herser is “to harrow”, which means to break up or level the surface of the soil with a harrow. The infinitive form is pronounced as “ehr-zay”.
The word herser has its roots in the Old French word “hers”, which comes from the Latin word “hirsutus” meaning “rough, shaggy”. The verb herser is most commonly used in the Futur Antérieur tense, which expresses an action that will have been completed at a specific point in the future.
Three examples of herser in the Futur Antérieur tense are:
- Je les aurai hersés avant la fin de la semaine. (I will have harrowed them before the end of the week.)
- Nous aurons hersé tout le champ avant la pluie. (We will have harrowed the entire field before the rain.)
- Ils auront hersé le jardin avant la plantation. (They will have harrowed the garden before planting.)
These sentences show the use of the Futur Antérieur tense to talk about a completed action in the future. In each example, the action of herser is completed before another event or point in time indicated by “avant” (before). In English, this tense is often translated using “will have + past participle”.
