Introduction to the verb aléser
The English translation of the French verb aléser is “to bore” or “to drill”. The infinitive form is pronounced “ah-leh-zeh”.
Aléser comes from the Old French word “aleser”, which comes from the Latin word “alere” meaning “to nourish”. In everyday French, it is most commonly used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a hypothetical or uncertain action that took place before another past action.
Example 1: J’aurais aimé que tu aies alésé le mur avant que je peigne. (I wish you had bored the wall before I painted.)
Example 2: Il se peut qu’elle ait alésé un trou dans le sol avant de planter les fleurs. (It’s possible that she drilled a hole in the ground before planting the flowers.)
