Subjonctif Imparfait (Subjunctive Imperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb clamper
Introduction to the verb clamper
The English translation of the French verb clamper is “to clamp” or “to fasten”. The infinitive form of clamper is pronounced “klahm-peh”.
Clamper comes from the Old French word “clamper” which means “to press” or “to squeeze”. It is most often used in everyday French in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense, which expresses a hypothetical or uncertain action in the past.
Three simple examples of its usage in this tense are:
- J’aurais aimé que tu clampe le tuyau avant qu’il ne se casse. (I would have liked for you to clamp the pipe before it broke.)
- Il fallait que nous clampions le colis pour qu’il ne s’ouvre pas pendant le transport. (We had to clamp the package so that it wouldn’t open during transportation.)
- Je souhaitais que vous clampiez bien la planche pour qu’elle tienne fermement. (I wished that you would clamp the board securely so that it would hold.)
In each of these examples, the Subjonctif Imparfait tense is used to express a hypothetical or desired action in the past. It is often used in conjunction with the verb “aimer” (to like/wish) or “fallait” (had to) to express a desired or necessary action in the past.
