Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb jachérer
Introduction to the verb jachérer
The English translation of jachérer is “to graze” or “to pasture.” The infinitive form is pronounced as “zha-sher-ay.”
The word jachérer originated from the Latin word “jacere,” meaning “to be at rest” or “lie down.” In Old French, it evolved into “jachiere” meaning “pasture” and eventually became “jachérer” in Modern French.
In everyday French, jachérer is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which expresses a past action that was hypothetical or uncertain. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense followed by the past participle of jachérer.
Examples:
- Il était inquiet que les vaches n’aient pas jachéré suffisamment avant la tempête. (He was worried that the cows had not grazed enough before the storm.)
- Nous avions peur que les animaux n’aient pas jachéré assez pour avoir assez de lait. (We were afraid that the animals had not grazed enough to have enough milk.)
- J’étais contente que les moutons aient jachéré dans le champ voisin. (I was glad that the sheep had grazed in the neighboring field.)
In all of these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is used to express a past action that was uncertain or hypothetical. The use of jachérer in this tense adds a sense of doubt or possibility to the sentence.
