Conditionnel Passé (Conditional Past) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb fiancer
Introduction to the verb fiancer
The English translation of the French verb fiancer is “to engage” or “to betroth.” The infinitive form, fiancer, is pronounced as “fee-ahn-say.”
The word fiancer comes from the Old French word fiancier, which comes from the Latin word fidāre, meaning “to trust” or “to rely on.” It is most often used in everyday French to refer to the act of becoming engaged to be married.
In the Conditionnel Passé tense, fiancer is used to express a hypothetical or uncertain action that occurred in the past. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb avoir in the Conditionnel Présent tense, followed by the past participle of fiancer (fiancé).
Here are three simple examples of its usage in the Conditionnel Passé tense:
-
Si j’avais accepté sa demande en mariage, nous nous serions fiancés. (If I had accepted his marriage proposal, we would have become engaged.)
-
Elle aurait aimé se fiancer avant de partir pour l’étranger. (She would have liked to get engaged before leaving for abroad.)
-
Ils auraient été fiancés pendant deux ans avant de se marier. (They would have been engaged for two years before getting married.)
