Introduction to the verb figurer
The English translation of the French verb figurer is “to figure/to represent.” It is pronounced as “fee-goo-ray.”
Figurer comes from the Latin word “figurare” meaning “to form, shape, or depict.” It entered into the French language in the 12th century, and its meaning evolved to also include the sense of “to imagine” or “to conceive.”
In everyday French, figurer is most often used in the Conditionnel Passé tense, which is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the Conditionnel Présent tense and the past participle of figurer.
