Introduction to the verb absenter
The English translation of the French verb absenter is “to absent oneself.” It is pronounced as “ab-sehn-teh.”
The word absenter comes from the Latin word “absentare,” meaning “to be absent.” In everyday French, it is most commonly used in the Futur Simple tense, which expresses actions or events that will happen in the future.
Three simple examples of its usage in this tense are:
- Je m’absenterai demain matin. (I will absent myself tomorrow morning.)
- Tu t’absenteras pendant les vacances. (You will absent yourself during the holidays.)
- Ils s’absenteront pour aller à un mariage. (They will absent themselves to go to a wedding.)
In these examples, the verb absenter is conjugated with the subject pronouns “je,” “tu,” and “ils” for the future tense form. The reflexive pronoun “se” is added before the verb to indicate that the subject will absent themselves. In English, the verb “to absent oneself” is used in the future tense to express the same idea.
