Introduction to the verb chialer
The English translation of the French verb chialer is “to cry” or “to whine”. It is pronounced “shee-ah-lay”.
Chialer comes from the Old French word “chialer” which means “to scream” or “to cry”. It is most often used in every day French in the L’impératif Présent tense, which is the imperative present tense, used to give commands or make requests.
Three simple examples of its usage in this tense are:
- Chiale un peu moins fort ! (Cry a little less loudly!)
- Ne chiale pas, tout va bien se passer. (Don’t cry, everything will be okay.)
- Chialons ensemble, ça nous fera du bien. (Let’s cry together, it will do us good.)
The imperative present tense is also often used in informal speech to express annoyance or frustration, so chialer can also be used in this context. For example: “Arrête de chialer !” (Stop whining!)
