L’infinitif Présent (Infinitive Present) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb décimer
Introduction to the verb décimer
The English translation of the French verb décimer is “to decimate.” It is pronounced as “day-see-may.”
The word décimer comes from the Latin word “decimare,” which means “to take a tenth.” In ancient Rome, when a military unit was performing poorly or disobeying orders, a practice called “decimation” was used as a form of punishment. One tenth of the soldiers would be randomly chosen and executed, hence the origin of the word.
In everyday French, décimer is most often used in the L’infinitif Présent tense, which is the present infinitive form. This form is used to express an action that has not yet been completed and does not specify a subject. It is often followed by another verb in the infinitive form or by a preposition.
