Linger means to delay or continue in an activity or state, especially in a leisurely or aimless way.

Examples of linger in Every Day Usage

  1. Je reste un peu plus longtemps au lit le week-end pour apprécier la chaleur des couvertures. (I linger in bed a little longer on weekends to enjoy the warmth of the blankets.)

  2. Les derniers invités ont tardé à partir et nous avons dû les prier de quitter la fête. (The last guests lingered and we had to ask them to leave the party.)

  3. Elle ne voulait pas que notre rendez-vous se termine, alors elle a fait durer la conversation. (She didn’t want our date to end, so she lingered in the conversation.)
