Passé Antérieur (Past Anterior) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb acculer
Introduction to the verb acculer
The English translation of the French verb acculer is “to corner” or “to drive into a corner.” The infinitive form is pronounced “ah-koo-leh.”
Acculer comes from the Old French word “acoler” which means “to press up against.” It is most often used in everyday French to describe a situation where someone or something is being pushed or driven into a corner or confined space.
In the Passé Antérieur tense, acculer is used to talk about a completed action in the past, before another action also in the past. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” (to have) or “être” (to be) in the imparfait tense, followed by the past participle of acculer (acculé).
Examples:
- J’avais acculé le chat dans la cuisine avant qu’il ne saute par la fenêtre. (I had cornered the cat in the kitchen before it jumped out the window.)
- Ils étaient acculés par les ennemis avant que les renforts n’arrivent. (They had been driven into a corner by the enemies before reinforcements arrived.)
- Elle s’était acculée dans le coin de la pièce quand la porte s’est fermée à clé. (She had cornered herself in the corner of the room when the door locked shut.)
