Passé Antérieur (Past Anterior) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb affréter
Introduction to the verb affréter
The English translation of the French verb affréter is “to charter”. It is pronounced “ah-freh-tay”.
The word affréter comes from the Old French word “affreter” which means to hire a ship. It is most often used in everyday French in the Passé Antérieur tense, which is a compound past tense used to express an action that occurred before another past action.
Examples:
- Nous avions affrété un bateau pour notre voyage en Corse. (We had chartered a boat for our trip to Corsica.)
- Les entreprises avaient affrété des avions pour transporter leurs employés vers la conférence. (The companies had chartered planes to transport their employees to the conference.)
- Après avoir affrété un bus, nous avons pu partir en excursion à la montagne. (After chartering a bus, we were able to go on a mountain excursion.)
In these examples, the Passé Antérieur tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another past action. In the first example, the chartering of the boat was completed before the trip to Corsica. In the second example, the chartering of the planes was completed before the conference. And in the third example, the chartering of the bus was completed before the mountain excursion.
