Plus-que-parfait (Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb drainer
Introduction to the verb drainer
The English translation of the French verb drainer is “to drain”. The infinitive form of the verb is pronounced “dreh-nay”.
The word “drainer” comes from the Old French word “draignier” which means “to draw out or remove”. It has its roots in the Latin word “trahere” which also means “to draw out or pull”. In everyday French, “drainer” is most often used to refer to the action of removing or evacuating liquid, especially from a specific location or container.
In the Plus-que-parfait tense, “drainer” is used to describe an action that had been completed in the past before another action took place. Here are three examples of its usage in this tense with their English translations:
- J’avais drainé l’eau de la baignoire avant de commencer à nettoyer la salle de bain. (I had drained the water from the bathtub before starting to clean the bathroom.)
- Ils avaient déjà drainer le lac lorsque nous sommes arrivés. (They had already drained the lake when we arrived.)
- Elle m’avait demandé de drainer l’huile de la boîte avant de jeter la boîte à la poubelle. (She had asked me to drain the oil from the can before throwing it in the trash.)
In all of these examples, the action of draining (or removing) the liquid was completed before another action was taken or before a specific point in time.
