Plus-que-parfait (Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb enraciner
Introduction to the verb enraciner
The English translation of the French verb enraciner is “to take root” or “to root”. It is pronounced as ahn-rah-see-nay (with the “n” sound at the end being barely audible).
Enraciner comes from the Latin word “radicare” which means “to root”. It is primarily used in everyday French to describe the action of a plant taking root in the ground.
In the plus-que-parfait tense, enraciner is used to describe an action that had already been completed in the past. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” in the imperfect tense and adding the past participle of enraciner, which is “enraciné”.
Here are three examples of enraciner in the plus-que-parfait tense:
-
J’avais enraciné les arbres dans le jardin avant l’arrivée de l’orage. (I had rooted the trees in the garden before the storm arrived.)
-

-
Les fleurs que j’avais enracinées ont maintenant bien poussé. (The flowers that I had rooted have now grown well.)
In these examples, enraciner is used to describe an action that took place before another past event. It is often used in storytelling or in recounting past events.
