The English translation of the French verb fretter is “to worry” or “to fret”. It is pronounced as “freh-tay” in the infinitive form.
Fretter comes from the Old French word “freter” which means “to gnaw” or “to devour”. It is derived from the Latin word “fretum” which means “to gnaw or fret at”. In everyday French, fretter is often used in the Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past perfect tense.
