Subjonctif Imparfait (Subjunctive Imperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb adouber
Introduction to the verb adouber
The English translation of the French verb adouber is “to dub” or “to knight.” The infinitive form, adouber, is pronounced as ah-doo-bay.
Adouber comes from the Old French word “adobar,” which means “to dress” or “to equip.” It ultimately derives from the Latin word “ad” meaning “to” and “opus” meaning “work.” Originally, adouber referred to the act of equipping a knight with armor and weapons, but it has evolved to also mean the formal act of conferring knighthood.
In everyday French, adouber is most often used in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense to express a hypothetical or uncertain action in the past. Some common expressions in this tense include “il fallait que j’adoube” (I had to dub), “j’aurais aimé qu’il adoubât” (I would have liked him to dub), or “si tu adoubais, je serais fière” (if you were to dub, I would be proud).
Three simple examples of adouber in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense are:
-
Il fallait que la reine adoubât le jeune chevalier. (The queen had to dub the young knight.)
-

-
Si tu adoubais ton fils, il pourrait poursuivre la tradition familiale. (If you were to dub your son, he could carry on the family tradition.)
