Subjonctif Imparfait (Subjunctive Imperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb brasser
Introduction to the verb brasser
The English translation of the French verb brasser is “to mix” or “to stir.” It is pronounced “brah-seh.”
Brasser comes from the Old French word “brasser” which means “to shake or move,” and can also be traced back to the Latin word “bracchium” which means “arm.” In everyday French, brasser is most often used in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense, which expresses a hypothetical or uncertain action in the past.
Here are three simple examples of how brasser is used in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense:
- Je voulais que tu brasses la salade. (I wanted you to mix the salad.)
- Il était important que nous brassions bien la pâte. (It was important that we mixed the dough well.)
- Elle aurait aimé que vous brassiez les couleurs pour obtenir une teinte plus claire. (She would have liked you to mix the colors to get a lighter shade.)
As you can see from these examples, brasser in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense expresses a desire or expectation for an action to have been completed in the past. It is often used in conjunction with the phrase “il fallait que” (it was necessary that) to express a duty or obligation in the past.
