Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb ajointer
Introduction to the verb ajointer
The English translation of the French verb ajointer is “to join” or “to add”. The infinitive form is pronounced “ah-jwan-tay”.
The word ajointer comes from the Old French word “ajoindre” which comes from the Latin “adjungere” meaning “to join together”. It is most often used in everyday French in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) tense to express a past hypothetical action or state that did not occur.
Three simple examples of its usage in this tense are:
- J’aurais aimé que tu aies ajouté plus de sucre dans le gâteau. (I wish you had added more sugar in the cake.)
- Il aurait fallu que nous ayons rejoint le groupe plus tôt pour ne pas manquer le train. (We should have joined the group earlier so we wouldn’t miss the train.)
- Il aurait été mieux que vous n’ayez pas ajouté de lait dans le café, puisque je suis allergique. (It would have been better if you hadn’t added milk in the coffee, since I am allergic.)
In all of these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is used to express a hypothetical situation in the past, where the action of joining or adding did not actually happen.
