Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb constater
Introduction to the verb constater
The English translation of the French verb constater is “to observe” or “to note.” It is pronounced as “kohn-stah-teh” in the infinitive form.
The word constater comes from the Latin verb constatare, meaning “to establish as true.” In everyday French, it is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past subjunctive tense used to express actions that have already happened in the past and are still uncertain or hypothetical.
Here are three simple examples of constater in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense:
- J’étais surpris qu’il n’ait pas constaté les dégâts avant de partir. (I was surprised that he hadn’t observed the damages before leaving.)
- Il est possible que nous ayons constaté des erreurs dans le rapport. (It is possible that we may have noted errors in the report.)
- Elle était heureuse que tu aies constaté son progrès en français. (She was happy that you had noticed her progress in French.)
In each of these examples, constater is used to express an action that has already happened in the past (avant de partir, dans le rapport, son progrès en français) and is uncertain or hypothetical (n’ait pas, possible que, heureuse que). It is often used in combination with other verbs, such as être (to be), avoir (to have), and pouvoir (can, to be able to), to express a possibility or doubt about something that has already occurred.
