Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb démouler
Introduction to the verb démouler
The English translation of the French verb démouler is “to unmold” or “to turn out.” It is pronounced as “day-moo-lay” in its infinitive form.
The verb démouler comes from the combination of the prefix dé-, meaning “to remove” and the noun moule, meaning “mold.” It is most often used in reference to baking or cooking, when taking a dish or cake out of its mold.
In the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, démouler is used when talking about a past action that did not happen or that could have happened differently. For example:
- J’aurais aimé que tu aies démoulé le gâteau plus tôt. (I wish you had unmolded the cake earlier.)
- Il était essentiel que nous ayons démoulé le pudding avant de le servir. (It was essential that we unmolded the pudding before serving it.)
- Si tu avais démoulé la tarte comme je te l’avais demandé, elle n’aurait pas été aussi abîmée. (If you had unmolded the pie as I had asked you to, it wouldn’t have been so damaged.)
In all of these examples, the action of démouler is in the past and did not happen or could have happened differently. The use of the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense adds a sense of regret or desired outcome to the statements.
