Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb enrhumer
Introduction to the verb enrhumer
The English translation of the French verb enrhumer is “to give someone a cold” or “to catch a cold.” It is pronounced as “ahn-ruh-may.”
Enrhumer originated from the French word “rhume” which means “cold.” It is most often used in everyday French in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which expresses a past action that was completed before another past action. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the Imparfait tense followed by the past participle of enrhumer, which is “enrhumé.”
Example 1: J’avais enrhumé mon frère avant qu’il ne parte en voyage. (I had given my brother a cold before he left on his trip.)
Example 2: Elle était enrhumée depuis une semaine avant qu’elle ne se sente mieux. (She had had a cold for a week before she started feeling better.)
Example 3: Nous avions enrhumé nos amis avant qu’ils ne reviennent de leur voyage. (We had given our friends a cold before they came back from their trip.)
In these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is used to talk about a completed action in the past (enrhumer) that happened before another past action (partir, se sentir mieux, revenir). The use of the word “avant que” (before) also indicates that the first action (enrhumer) was completed before the second action took place.
