Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb espérer
Introduction to the verb espérer
The English translation of the French verb espérer is “to hope.” It is pronounced as “es-peh-reh” in the infinitive form.
Espérer comes from the Latin word “sperare” which means “to hope.” It entered the French language in the 12th century and has been used in its current form since the 14th century.
In everyday French, espérer is often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a hope or wish for something that has already happened in the past.
Example 1: J’espérais qu’il ait réussi son examen. (I hoped that he had passed his exam.)
Example 2: Nous espérions que vous ayez aimé le film. (We hoped that you had liked the movie.)
Example 3: Ils espéraient qu’elle se soit remise de sa maladie. (They hoped that she had recovered from her illness.)
In these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is formed by using the past tense of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” (depending on the verb used) followed by the past participle of espérer, and then adding the subjunctive form of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être.”
