Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb floquer
Introduction to the verb floquer
The English translation of the French verb floquer is “to flock” or “to flock with a design.” It is pronounced “floh-kay.”
Floquer comes from the Old French word “floc” which means “flock” or “group.” In everyday French, it is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a past action that is hypothetical or uncertain. This tense is formed by combining the imperfect tense of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” with the past participle of floquer.
Example 1: J’aurais floqué mon maillot si j’avais eu le temps. (I would have flocked my jersey if I had had time.)
Example 2: Tu serais venue avec moi si tu avais pu te libérer. (You would have come with me if you had been able to free yourself.)
Example 3: Il aurait fallu que nous ayons floqué les t-shirts avant la fête. (We would have had to flock the t-shirts before the party.)
In all three examples, the action of flocking is uncertain or conditional on another event. The Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is often used in French to express regret, wishes, or hypothetical situations.
