Introduction to the verb gaver
The English translation of the French verb gaver is “to stuff” or “to overfeed.” It is pronounced “gah-vay.”
The word gaver comes from the Old French word “gaver” which means “to stuff” or “to gorge.” It can be traced back to the Latin word “gavare” which has the same meaning. In everyday French, gaver is most often used in the subjonctif plus-que-parfait tense, which is used to express an action that has already happened in the past, but is even further in the past than another action.
Here are three simple examples of gaver in the subjonctif plus-que-parfait tense with their English translations:
- Il fallait que je les aie gavés avant qu’ils partent. (I needed to have stuffed them before they left.)
- Elle avait peur que ses parents l’eussent gavée de nourriture. (She was afraid her parents had overfed her.)

In all of these examples, gaver is used to express an action that happened in the past, before another past action. It is often used in a figurative sense, such as being “stuffed” with emotions or ideas.
