Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb gommer
Introduction to the verb gommer
The English translation of the French verb gommer is “to erase” or “to rub out.” It is pronounced “goh-may” in its infinitive form.
The word “gomme” comes from the Latin word “gummi” meaning “rubber,” and it entered the French language in the 16th century. In everyday French, gommer is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express actions that could have happened in the past, but did not actually occur. This tense is formed by using the subjunctive form of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” plus the past participle of the main verb.
Three simple examples of gommer in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense are:
- Si j’avais su qu’il était allergique aux noix, je lui aurais gommé le nom de notre restaurant préféré. (If I had known he was allergic to nuts, I would have erased the name of our favorite restaurant for him.)
- Nous aurions gommé cette erreur dans le rapport si nous avions eu plus de temps. (We would have erased this mistake in the report if we had had more time.)
- Il aurait gommé ses traces pour ne pas être accusé de vol. (He would have erased his tracks to avoid being accused of theft.)
In all of these examples, gommer is used to express an action that did not take place in the past, but could have potentially happened. The Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait is used to talk about hypothetical or unreal situations, and gommer is often used to describe something that could have been removed or erased in these situations.
