Introduction to the verb incarner
The English translation of the French verb incarner is “to embody” or “to personify.” The infinitive form is pronounced “ahn-kar-nay.”
The language origin of incarner comes from the Latin word “incarnare,” meaning “to make flesh.” It entered the French language in the 13th century, originally referring to the religious concept of God becoming human in the form of Jesus Christ. Over time, it came to also refer to the act of embodying or personifying a concept or idea.
In everyday French, incarner is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a hypothetical or unreal condition in the past. It is often used in conjunction with the word “si” (if) to express a conditional statement.
