Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb lever
Introduction to the verb lever
The English translation of the French verb lever is “to lift” or “to raise.” It is pronounced “luh-vay.”
The origin of the word lever can be traced back to the Latin word “levare,” meaning “to raise.” In everyday French, the verb lever is often used in its reflexive form “se lever,” which means “to get up” or “to stand up.”
In the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, lever is used to express a past action that was completed before another past action. It is often used with conjunctions such as “quand” or “lorsque,” meaning “when” or “whenever.”
1) Quand j’étais jeune, j’avais peur de me lever tôt le matin. (When I was young, I was afraid of getting up early in the morning.)
2) Lorsque tu m’as appelé, je m’étais déjà levé. (When you called me, I had already gotten up.)
3) Nous avions pris notre petit déjeuner quand le soleil s’est levé. (We had eaten our breakfast when the sun rose.)
In these examples, the verb lever is conjugated in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to indicate that the action of getting up or rising had already been completed before the other past action mentioned in the sentence. The English translations also use the past perfect tense to convey the same meaning.
