The English translation of tituber is “to stagger” or “to stumble”. It is pronounced “tee-too-bay”. The verb tituber comes from the Latin word “titubare” which means “to stagger”.
In everyday French, tituber is most often used to describe someone walking unsteadily or stumbling due to being drunk or unsteady on their feet.
Example 1: Il a trop bu et il titube en marchant. (He drank too much and is staggering as he walks.)
Example 2: Les enfants ont joué toute la journée et maintenant ils titubent de fatigue. (The children played all day and now they are stumbling from exhaustion.)
Example 3: Le vieil homme titubait en tenant sa canne. (The old man was staggering while holding his cane.)
Note: For simplicity, only the infinitive form and 3 examples of usage have been given, but the verb can also be used in other tenses and forms such as “tu titubes” (you are staggering) or “il a titubé” (he staggered).
