Passé Antérieur (Past Anterior) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb complexer
Introduction to the verb complexer
The English translation of the French verb complexer is “to feel self-conscious/to be self-conscious”. The infinitive form of complexer is pronounced as “kom-plek-se”.
Complexer comes from the Latin word “complexus” which means “to embrace/to surround”. In everyday French, it is most often used in the Passé Antérieur tense, which is the past tense used for actions that occurred before another past action. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the passé simple tense followed by the past participle of the verb.
Here are three simple examples of complexer used in the Passé Antérieur tense:
- J’eus complexé en voyant toutes ces belles femmes. (I felt self-conscious when I saw all these beautiful women.)
- Tu eus complexé devant le public lors de ta première présentation. (You were self-conscious in front of the audience during your first presentation.)
- Ils eurent complexé en découvrant leur cadeau d’anniversaire. (They were self-conscious when they discovered their birthday present.)
Note: In all these examples, the verb complexer is used with the auxiliary verb “avoir”. However, if the subject is plural and begins with a vowel or silent “h”, then the auxiliary verb “être” is used instead. For example: Elles furent complexées par leurs vêtements. (They were self-conscious about their clothes.)
