Passé Antérieur (Past Anterior) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb constituer
Introduction to the verb constituer
The English translation of the French verb constituer is “to constitute” or “to establish.” It is pronounced “koh-stee-too-ay” in the infinitive form.
The word “constituer” comes from the Latin word “constituere” which means “to set up” or “to establish.” It is most often used in everyday French to talk about the creation or formation of something, such as a company, a government, or a team.
In the Passé Antérieur tense, constituer is used to talk about actions that were completed in the past before another past action. This tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the Passé Simple tense, followed by the past participle of constituer (constitué).
Here are three examples of constituer used in the Passé Antérieur tense, with their English translations:
- J’ai constitué une équipe de travail avant de démarrer le projet. (I had formed a team before starting the project.)
- Les fondateurs ont constitué la société en 2005. (The founders had established the company in 2005.)
- Nous avons constitué un dossier complet avant de soumettre notre demande. (We had put together a complete file before submitting our application.)
