Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb constituer
Introduction to the verb constituer
The English translation of constituer is “to constitute” or “to establish”. The infinitive form, constituer, is pronounced as “kohN-stee-tyu-ay”.
The word constituer comes from the Latin term “constituere” which means “to set up” or “to establish”. It entered the French language in the late 13th century and has been used in various contexts since then.
In everyday French, the verb constituer is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which is a past tense used to express a hypothetical or uncertain action that took place before another past action. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense followed by the past participle of constituer.
Here are three examples of constituer used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense:
-
J’espérais que tu aies constitué une équipe solide avant le match. (I was hoping that you had established a strong team before the game.)
-
Il est dommage que nous n’ayons pas constitué cette association plus tôt. (It’s a shame that we didn’t set up this association earlier.)
-
C’était essentiel que vous eussiez constitué une bonne réserve financière avant la crise. (It was essential that you had created a good financial reserve before the crisis.)
In these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is used to express a situation or action that took place before another past action, and that is uncertain or hypothetical. It is often used in more formal or literary contexts.
