Passé Composé (Present Perfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb cafter
Introduction to the verb cafter
The English translation of the French verb cafter is “to snitch” or “to tattle.” It is pronounced as “kahf-tey” in its infinitive form.
Cafter comes from the French word “caftan,” meaning “to wear a caftan.” Over time, its meaning evolved to refer to someone who wears a long robe, and eventually came to refer to someone who betrays or exposes secrets.
In everyday French, cafter is most often used in the Passé Composé (Present Perfect) tense to describe an action that has just happened in the past. For example:
- J’ai cafté à mes parents que tu as séché les cours. (I snitched to my parents that you skipped class.)
- Elle a cafté à son chef pour obtenir une promotion. (She tattled to her boss to get a promotion.)
- On a découvert que c’était lui qui avait cafté à la police. (We found out that it was him who snitched to the police.)
In all of these examples, cafter is used to describe someone who reveals information or secrets to someone in a position of authority. It can also be used in a more general sense, without the implication of betrayal, as in the phrase “cafter sur quelqu’un” which means “to talk about someone behind their back.”
