Introduction to the verb dévier
The English translation of the French verb dévier is “to deviate” or “to veer off.” The infinitive form of dévier is pronounced as “deh-vyey.”
Détourner comes from the Latin word “deviare” which means “to turn aside.” In everyday French, dévier is most commonly used in the Passé Composé (Present Perfect) tense, which is used to talk about past actions that are completed and have a specific time frame.
