Plus-que-parfait (Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb béguer
Introduction to the verb béguer
The English translation of the French verb béguer is “to beg.” It is pronounced as “bay-guh.”
The origin of the word béguer can be traced back to the Latin word “beguere” which means “to ask earnestly.” In modern French, it is most often used in every day speech to mean “to beg” or “to plead.”
In the Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past perfect tense in English, béguer is generally used to express an action that had already been completed before another past action. Here are three simple examples of its usage in this tense:
-
J’avais déjà bégué pour de l’argent avant qu’il ne me le donne. (I had already begged for money before he gave it to me.)
-
Elle avait bégué à son patron de lui accorder une augmentation de salaire. (She had pleaded with her boss to give her a raise.)
-
Nous avions bégué auprès de nos parents pour qu’ils nous laissent sortir tard le soir. (We had begged our parents to let us stay out late at night.)
In all of these examples, the action of begging had already been completed before the other past action took place. The use of the Plus-que-parfait tense emphasizes the sequence of events and shows that the action of begging happened first.
