Introduction to the verb brouter
The English translation of the French verb brouter is “to graze.” It is pronounced “broo-tay.”
Brouter comes from the Latin word “brodare” which means “to eat grass.” In everyday French, it is most often used in the Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past perfect tense. This tense is used to talk about an action that was completed before another action in the past.
Example 1: J’avais brouté avant de partir. (I had grazed before leaving.)
Example 2: Tu avais brouté toute la journée. (You had grazed all day.)

In each of these examples, the action of grazing had already been completed before another action in the past. In English, this tense is often translated as “had + past participle.”
