Introduction to the verb lifter
The English translation of lifter is “to lift”. It is pronounced as “leeft-ay” in the infinitive form.
The word “lifter” comes from the Old French word “lefter”, which is derived from the Latin word “levare” meaning “to raise” or “to lift”. In everyday French, the verb lifter is most often used in the Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past perfect tense in English. This tense is used to describe an action that took place before another action in the past.
Here are three examples of the verb lifter in the Plus-que-parfait tense:
- J’avais lifté les valises avant qu’elle n’arrive. (I had lifted the suitcases before she arrived.)
- Tu avais lifté les poids avant de te blesser. (You had lifted the weights before getting injured.)
- Ils avaient lifté le trophée avant que la cérémonie ne commence. (They had lifted the trophy before the ceremony started.)
In all of these examples, the verb lifter is used to indicate an action that had already happened in the past, before another action took place. The Plus-que-parfait tense is commonly used in French to add more context and depth to past events.
