Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb cloper
Introduction to the verb cloper
The English translation of the French verb cloper is “to hobble” or “to limp.” The infinitive form of the verb is pronounced “klo-pay.”
Cloper comes from the old French word “clopier” which means “to limp” or “to walk with difficulty.” It can be traced back to the Latin word “claudere” which has the same meaning. In everyday French, cloper is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a past hypothetical or unlikely action.
Example 1:
J’aurais aimé que tu aies clopé jusqu’à la voiture. (I would have liked for you to have hobbled to the car.)
This sentence expresses a regret about a past action that did not happen – the person did not actually hobble to the car.
Example 2:
Il est possible que tu aies clopé jusqu’à la fin de la rue. (It is possible that you hobbled until the end of the road.)
This sentence expresses a possibility in the past – the person may or may not have actually hobbled to the end of the road.
Example 3:
Nous aurions aimé que vous ayez clopé jusqu’au sommet de la montagne. (We would have liked for you to have hobbled to the top of the mountain.)
This sentence expresses a wish or desire for a past action – the person did not actually hobble to the top of the mountain.
In these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” in the Imperfect tense followed by the past participle of cloper, “clopé,” and the appropriate subject pronoun.
