Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb compter
Introduction to the verb compter
The English translation of the French verb compter is “to count” or “to reckon.” It is pronounced “kom-teh.”
The word compter comes from the Latin word “computare,” meaning “to calculate.” It entered the French language in the 12th century and has been in use ever since. In everyday French, compter is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past subjunctive tense.
Some examples of its usage in this tense are:
- J’avais compté que tu viendrais à la fête. (I had counted on you coming to the party.)
- Nous avions compté qu’il aurait fini son travail à temps. (We had reckoned that he would have finished his work on time.)
- Elle avait compté qu’ils auraient oublié son anniversaire. (She had expected them to have forgotten her birthday.)
In each of these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is used to express the idea of something that was expected or counted on in the past, but did not actually happen. It is often used in hypothetical or uncertain situations.
