Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb crasser
Introduction to the verb crasser
The English translation of the French verb crasser is “to crush” or “to mash.” It is pronounced as “krah-sey” in the infinitive form.
Crasser comes from the Latin word “crassus,” meaning thick or bulky. In everyday French, it is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which expresses a past action that is prior to another past action. This tense is formed by using the imperfect subjunctive form of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” and the past participle of the main verb.
Three examples of its usage in this tense are:
- Il fallait que j’eusse crassé les pommes avant de les mettre dans la tarte. (I had to crush the apples before putting them in the pie.)
- Nous aurions préféré que vous eussiez crassé les feuilles avant de les donner aux lapins. (We would have preferred if you had crushed the leaves before giving them to the rabbits.)
- Elle craignait que le facteur n’eût crassé le colis en le déposant sur le sol. (She was afraid that the mailman had crushed the package by dropping it on the ground.)
