Introduction to the verb lancer
The English translation of the French verb lancer is “to throw” or “to launch.” It is pronounced as “lahn-say” in its infinitive form.
The word lancer comes from the Latin word “lanceare,” which means “to throw with a lance.” In everyday French, it is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which expresses a hypothetical action that took place before another action in the past.
- J’avais lancé le ballon avant que tu n’arrives. (I had thrown the ball before you arrived.)
- Il avait lancé une invitation avant que je ne parte en vacances. (He had extended an invitation before I left for vacation.)
- Elle avait lancé un regard méprisant avant que je ne lui réponde. (She had thrown a disdainful look before I answered her.)
In all of these examples, the lancer verb is used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to indicate an action that had already occurred before another action in the past. In English, this tense is often translated as “had + past participle.”
