Introduction to the verb modeler
The English translation of the French verb modeler is “to model” or “to shape.” The infinitive form is pronounced “moh-deh-leh.”
The word “modeler” comes from the French word “modèle,” meaning “model.” In everyday French, “modeler” is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the subjunctive past perfect tense. This tense is used to express an action that hypothetically occurred before another past action.
Example 1: J’aurais aimé que tu aies modelé cette sculpture avant qu’elle ne soit exposée. (I would have liked for you to have modeled this sculpture before it was exhibited.)
Example 2: Il était sûr qu’elle avait modelé ce dessin avant de le donner en cadeau. (He was sure that she had modeled this drawing before giving it as a gift.)
Example 3: Nous regrettions qu’ils eussent modelé ce projet sans nous en parler. (We regretted that they had modeled this project without talking to us about it.)
In all these examples, the verb modeler is conjugated in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express an action that took place before a past event, and is often preceded by a verb in the conditional tense or the past tense. The English translations also use the past tense to convey the same meaning.
