Introduction to the verb enchaîner
The English translation of the French verb enchaîner is “to chain” or “to link” in literal sense. It can also mean “to follow on” or “to continue” in a figurative sense.
In its infinitive form, enchaîner is pronounced as “ahn-shey-neh”.
Enchaîner comes from the Old French word “enchaîner” which comes from the Latin word “catena” meaning “chain”. In everyday French, enchaîner is often used in the Subjonctif Présent tense to express a desire, a wish, or a possibility.
Examples:
1) J’aimerais que tu enchaînes les exercices de maths avant de sortir. (I would like you to do the math exercises before going out.)
2) Il est important que nous enchaînions les différentes étapes du projet pour qu’il soit terminé à temps. (It is important that we follow the different steps of the project so that it is finished on time.)
3) Je souhaite que tu enchaînes tes études avec un stage en entreprise. (I hope that you continue your studies with an internship in a company.)
Note: In all these examples, the Subjonctif Présent tense is used after the verb “aimer”, “être important que”, and “souhaiter” to express a wish or a desire.
English translations:
1) I would like you to do the math exercises before going out.
2) It is important that we follow the different steps of the project so that it is finished on time.
3) I hope that you continue your studies with an internship in a company.
