Plus-que-parfait (Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb coincer
Introduction to the verb coincer
The English translation of the French verb coincer is “to get stuck” or “to jam.” The infinitive form is pronounced “kwan-say.”
The word “coincer” comes from the Latin word “constringere,” meaning “to constrict.” It entered the French language in the 12th century and has been used in everyday language since then.
In the Plus-que-parfait tense, coincer is most often used to express an action that was already completed in the past before another action took place. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” in the imparfait tense followed by the past participle of coincer, which is “coincé.”
Here are three simple examples of coincer in the Plus-que-parfait tense and their English translations:
- J’avais coincé ma clé dans la serrure avant de sortir de la maison. (I had gotten my key stuck in the lock before leaving the house.)
- Ils avaient coincé leur voiture dans une boue épaisse en essayant de sortir du champ. (They had gotten their car stuck in thick mud while trying to get out of the field.)
- Tu avais coincé ton doigt dans la porte en claquant celle-ci. (You had gotten your finger stuck in the door while slamming it.)
In all of these examples, the action of getting stuck had already occurred in the past before another action or event took place. The Plus-que-parfait tense is used to show that the coincer happened before the other action.
