Conditionnel Passé (Conditional Past) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb accoter
Introduction to the verb accoter
The English translation of the French verb accoter is “to lean against” or “to prop up against.” The infinitive form, accoter, is pronounced “ah-koh-tay.”
The word accoter comes from the Old French word coter, meaning “to rest or prop against.” It is derived from the Latin word cotare, which means “to support or prop up.”
In everyday French, accoter is most often used in the Conditionnel Passé tense, which expresses a hypothetical action in the past. This tense is formed by using the conditional form of the auxiliary verb avoir or être and the past participle of the main verb.
Three simple examples of using accoter in the Conditionnel Passé tense are:
- Si j’avais accoté cette échelle, je ne serais pas tombé. (If I had leaned the ladder against the wall, I wouldn’t have fallen.)
- Elle aurait pu accoter sa tête sur mon épaule pour dormir. (She could have leaned her head on my shoulder to sleep.)
- Nous l’aurions accoté dans le coin pour qu’il ne bouge pas. (We would have propped him up in the corner so he wouldn’t move.)
In all three examples, the verb accoter is conjugated in the conditional form (accoté, aurait accoté, aurions accoté) and paired with the past participle of the main verb (fallen, slept, moved). This tense is used to express a hypothetical or imagined action that could have happened in the past under certain conditions.
