Plus-que-parfait (Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb démastiquer
Introduction to the verb démastiquer
The English translation of the French verb démastiquer is “to unstick” or “to remove with difficulty.” It is pronounced as “day-mas-tee-kay.”
The word démastiquer comes from the combination of the prefix “dé-” which indicates a reversal or undoing of an action, and the verb “mastiquer” which means “to chew” or “to stick.” It is most often used in every day French to describe the action of separating two things that are stuck together.
In the Plus-que-parfait tense, which corresponds to the past perfect tense in English, démastiquer is used to describe an action that had been completed before another past action. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” (to have) in the imperfect tense, followed by the past participle of démastiquer.
Here are three simple examples of démastiquer in the Plus-que-parfait tense:
- J’avais démastiqué le chewing-gum avant de le jeter à la poubelle. (I had unstuck the chewing gum before throwing it in the trash.)
- Les enfants avaient démastiqué toutes les affiches sur le mur. (The children had removed all the posters from the wall.)
- Elle m’avait aidé à démastiquer les étiquettes collées sur les bocaux. (She had helped me unstick the labels from the jars.)
In these examples, démastiquer is used to describe a past action that had been completed before another past action. Without the Plus-que-parfait tense, the sentences would be incomplete or the sequence of events would be unclear.
