Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb décoder
Introduction to the verb décoder
The English translation of the French verb décoder is “to decode.” It is pronounced as [de-koh-deh] in the infinitive form.
The word décoder comes from the French prefix dé- meaning “off” or “down,” and the word code, which comes from the Latin word codex meaning “book.” Therefore, décoder originally meant “to take something apart, to decipher a code or message.”
In everyday French, décoder is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a past event that did not happen or a hypothetical situation in the past. This tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb avoir or être in the Subjonctif Imparfait and the past participle of décoder, décodé.
Here are three examples of décoder used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense with their English translations:
- Si j’avais suivi ses conseils, j’aurais décodé le message crypté. (If I had followed his advice, I would have decoded the encrypted message.)
- Le hacker aurait pu décoder le système de sécurité s’il avait eu plus de temps. (The hacker could have decoded the security system if he had more time.)
- Elle avait souhaité que son frère décodât le message avant sa réunion. (She had wished her brother would have decoded the message before her meeting.)
In all three examples, décoder is used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a past event that did not happen. In the first sentence, the speaker did not follow the advice and therefore did not decode the message. In the second sentence, the hacker did not have enough time to decode the security system. In the third sentence, the sister’s wish was not fulfilled as her brother did not decode the message before her meeting.
