Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb dîner
Introduction to the verb dîner
The English translation of the French verb dîner is “to dine” or “to have dinner.” It is pronounced as “dee-nay.”
The word dîner comes from the Latin word “disjējūnāre” which means “to break fast.” The word was then adopted into Old French as “disner” which meant “to eat the first meal of the day.” Eventually, the meaning shifted to refer to the main meal of the day, which is usually dinner in French culture.
In every day French, the verb dîner is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a hypothetical or uncertain action that occurred before another past action. This tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the plus-que-parfait tense followed by the past participle of the verb.
Here are three examples of dîner used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense:
- Il était important que nous ayons dîné avant de partir. (It was important for us to have dined before leaving.)
- J’aurais aimé qu’il ait dîné avec nous hier soir. (I would have liked for him to have dined with us last night.)
- Il est possible que vous soyez déjà rentrés après avoir dîné. (It is possible that you had already returned after dining.)
In all of these examples, the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense is used to express a past action that was necessary, desired, or possible in relation to another past action. The use of the verb dîner in this tense adds a sense of uncertainty or doubt to the action.
