Introduction to the verb estimer
The English translation of the French verb estimer is “to estimate” or “to assess”. The infinitive form of the verb, estimer, is pronounced as “es-ti-may”.
The word estimer comes from the Latin word aestimare, meaning “to value” or “to estimate”. It entered the French language in the 12th century and has been used in everyday French since then.
In the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, estimer is used to express a past hypothetical action or estimation. This tense is formed by using the past subjunctive form of the auxiliary verb avoir or être followed by the past participle of estimer.
