Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb exécuter
Introduction to the verb exécuter
The English translation of the French verb exécuter is “to execute” or “to carry out”. The infinitive form is pronounced as “eg-zay-coo-tay”.
The word exécuter comes from the Latin word “exsequi” meaning “to follow out” or “to carry out”. It entered the French language in the 12th century and was initially used to refer to the act of carrying out a military order or command. Today, it is commonly used in everyday French to mean “to perform”, “to carry out”, or “to accomplish” a task or action.
In the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, exécuter is used to express a past action that may or may not have been completed, but that is viewed as hypothetical or uncertain. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” in the Subjonctif Imparfait tense followed by the past participle of exécuter.
3 examples of exécuter in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense are:
- J’espérais qu’ils eussent exécuté mes instructions à la lettre. (I hoped that they had executed my instructions to the letter.)
- Il était important que tu eusses exécuté ta mission avant le coucher du soleil. (It was important that you had executed your mission before sunset.)
- Nous regrettons que vous n’eussiez pas exécuté vos promesses. (We regret that you had not executed your promises.)
In these examples, exécuter is used to express a past action (the execution of instructions, a mission, or promises) that may or may not have been completed, but that is viewed as hypothetical or uncertain. The use of the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense adds a sense of doubt or possibility to the action.
